The image of the lone Spitfire with the White Cliffs of Dover behind it has become the symbol of the "Battleof Britton", just as much as Churchhill's famous speach ""We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!" The fighter that really bore the brunt of the fighting was the Hawker Hurricane at the start of the "Battle of Britton" the Spitfire was not being produced in large number and there were only a handful of squadrons that had then.
